FNQ 3 – How much are you worth? Haemorrhoid story
Late 90’s in my clinic in Bulimba, Bne, (a bit of an exclusive suburb). Everybody with their blackberries, so important in their outside lives – the head of Deloitte’s or, barristers etc – but they couldn’t make babies. Once baby happened, back to work – a nanny from the time the kid was six weeks old. They didn’t breastfeed, and life went on. Too busy for breakfast time to have breakfast. Too busy organizing the world.
At the time I lived at the back of Maleny, was busy in my acre of garden. People couldn’t normally get me on the phone because I was on a bit of a slope, with tall trees all around. A woman had come in to see me sometime prior. She was pregnant, and she had a backache. I fixed that, and I suggested she came in once a month because that was my process. If anything untoward happened, come back before then, but come back and see me every month, to keep you on track. When we got to closer to birth, if they were still going to work, I’d tell them they could only work four days a week, and they had to have Wednesday off – so they were having two days’ work, one off, two days’ work, two days off to get ready for the fact that they were going to need to go from ‘being a man’ to being a new mum, just like that. She obviously thought I was, income making and so she decided she wasn’t going to. I thought, well, we’ll see. Sometime later, I’m in the garden, and for whatever reason, I did have enough signal to hear her. Did I remember her? I’m thinking, yes, I do. She said, can I come and see you? I said, well, tomorrow, because I am not there at the moment.
What’s the problem? She’s got a haemorrhoid. Can I help? Yeah, probably. So she comes in, I have a look, because, you know, GV 1 isn’t going to go in because she’s pregnant, but I need to have a look. About the size of your thumb, first joint and glistening purple. At this point about early 30 weeks, pregnant. I’m going between rooms, giving her a chance to ponder on why she thinks it has happened. No idea – just happened. I go through likelihoods, as bodies just don’t do this. There’s something that has gone on. We need to get to the bottom of it. I’m walking her through from a TCM point of view, because it’s easy to teach and talk to people TCM. It doesn’t mean it’s what we need. It’s what they get. And I’m telling her about the Spleen energy and how it’s to hold everything in place. Generally speaking, it’s either, like having a really hot curry (I’ve had a guy come in who’d done this two nights before, and now he had a really bad haemorrhoid. Easy to fix. I calmed it down. Do not repeat.
‘Old wives tales’ are the truth. People come in with all sorts of haemorrhoids problems. It’s not a pooing problem, necessarily. Could well be a Liver energy going across and attacking. Spleen energy. Combo of lots of things – and also the cold insulting the Spleen Qi, so it cannot hold anything in place. Hot spicy stuff or the Spleen energy upset by anything cold. What were you doing before this happened? Well, she’d spent six and a half hours in the yard with her husband. And I’m thinking to myself, as I’m in the next room, I suppose, you know, if she’s used to sitting behind a desk and now she’s out moving things around all the time. And I come back in and what else happened? Oh, she says, that’s right.
We jumped in the swimming pool. It was the beginning of September and it was icy cold and it felt amazing. There we go. I’m looking at it and I’m going, well, I’ve pushed babies out, I think this will be awkward. . She’s got lots of money – I said, I’d like you to go back to your obstetrician, and see what he wants to do about you birthing. He’d never seen anything like it. I’d already given her a very large list of what to do when she got home, tell her husband that she wasn’t allowed to drink anything that was less than body temperature. She wasn’t allowed to sit on anything that was cold. She wasn’t allowed to have anything cool – not to be wandering on the cold floor, even the wooden floor with nothing on her feet. She was banned from anything cold because her Spleen energy had taken such a hit. We had to sort this out as baby was only going to get heavier, creating more pressure. I couldn’t do what I normally would to sort out a haemorrhoid. We’ve got this thing going to get bigger and bigger, and then she’s going to push out a baby with it. She sees the obstetrician.
The obstetrician has never seen anything like it. Sends her to the proctologist. Proctologist’s never seen anything like it before. He tells her to pack it in ice for 24 hours. She rings me up the next day. She’s got three now. I said, oh, that’s interesting. Did the obstetrician know what had happened? No. Did the proctologist.? No, he had no idea why that had happened. Joining the dots is not happening here. I said, well, I remember saying . . . . . why didn’t you ring me up? She said, well, they cost me so much. I figured they knew what they were talking about. Bottom line.
If you don’t charge what you’re worth, it’s a waste of your time because they’re not going to hear you, because they don’t value what you’ve said because you haven’t validated what you’re doing in their eyes.
