Day and night we are all bombarded by stress. The stress may come from a traumatic blow such as an automobile accident, allergic reaction, surgical trauma, emotional upset, from severe exposure to heat or cold, or from more insidious causes such as malnutrition or sleep deprivation or sustained periods of overwork.

So long as our bodies can cope with this stress, we all continue to adapt to life’s challenges and live within what we call the body’s “elastic limits,” so-called because the human body is like a rubber band, free and pliable, and able to tolerate an often surprising degree of loads and stresses. However, if any of these stressors prove to be too strong or prolonged for the body to absorb, we exceed these elastic limits, and the rubber band stretches too far and breaks. When this occurs, we have moved from simple stress to what we call “strain.”

Strain manifests as muscle tension – muscles that are unable to fully relax after use and remain in a state of fatigue. Tense and tight muscles limit the bloodstream’s capacity to carry away the waste products that have accumulated in the tissue as a result of metabolism. These “fatigue poisons” (as they are known) that are left behind are stored in the muscle tissue where they cause pain. Ultimately, tight muscles will pull the spine out of alignment which can result in neck, shoulder and low back pains.

Logan Basic Chiropractic Technique treats the muscles that control spinal balance in order to release this tension. The proper leverage, applied ever so lightly at the right spot, will cause the entire spine to move towards balance. This method is similar in principle to that used to change a flat tire. The proper leverage of a car jack will allow a comparatively small person to elevate a heavy car right off the ground.

Before treatment begins, the doctor analyzes the patient’s spine while he or she stands in front of a plumb line. Further examination may also be made with the patient lying face up and/or face down on the table. Then, with the patient lying face down, the doctor places a very light pressure on a pre-determined “leverage spot” on the sacral bone in the low back, employing the same principle described in using a car jack. This spot is held for 10 to 15 minutes while the doctor lightly rubs the back muscles with his other hand, coaxing them to release tension.

In the science of physiology, there is a theorem (known as Starling’s Law) which states that very light pressure is effective because a minimal stimulus gets the maximum response. Experience has shown that strong pressures on the muscle often cause the body to tighten to protect itself, but a light pressure generally produces a deep relaxation.

Basic Technique treatment, in this gentle but powerful manner, causes a release of deep muscle tension. Fatigue poisons are then immediately eliminated and the effects of strain are reduced in the body. A more flexible and elastic tone is restored to the total body, and with that, the body’s own self-healing mechanism is awakened.

The number of treatments needed to break the stress/strain cycle is different for each person, because each person’s medical history and physical makeup are necessarily different. Treatment determination will depend upon the patient’s age, the nature of the disorder, the length of time it has been there, and most importantly, the individual’s responsiveness to treatment.

All healing is truly self-healing, but a body in deep strain often cannot garner the forces to restore well-being on its own. Logan Basic for a Natural Pregnancy and Labor

The pregnant woman’s body undergoes many changes during pregnancy and much of this change happens in the pelvis and sacrum. Shifts in sacral alignment during pregnancy can lead to increased lower back pain and hip pain as well as increased labor time and difficulty.

A chiropractor, named Hugh B. Logan, recognized the importance of sacral alignment and founded a gentle, low-force adjustment called Logan Basic Technique to help realign and balance the sacrum, the surrounding muscles, and ligaments. Logan Basic Technique during pregnancy can help promote proper position of the sacrum which is vital for for achieving a more comfortable pregnancy and natural labor and delivery.

How Does it Work?

The sacrum or tailbone is located at the base of the spine acting as natural foundation for the spine above. Just like a house needs a level foundation to avoid shifting so does our spines. Often during pregnancy, due to the change in center of gravity and increased laxity of ligaments there can be a misalignment or change in the natural position of the sacrum. This misalignment is seen as one side of the sacrum tipping forward. Logan Basic Technique is comprised of a specific evaluation of the sacrum and surrounding musculature to determine which side of the sacrum needs correction. The adjustment is a light contact on the sacrotuberous ligament to help lift the side of sacrum which has rocked forward.

Logan Basic and Pregnancy

In regards to pregnancy and labor, normal sacral position and balance of the pelvis is vital. During pregnancy, it’s not uncommon for women to experience increased tightness the lower back and gluteal muscles which can lead to lower back, hip, and pubic pain. Logan Basic Technique can be performed safely throughout the entirety of pregnancy and can help reduce pregnancy-related symptoms and provide optimal pelvic function.

Other Benefits of Logan Basic Technique

Another wonderful aspect to this gentle technique is its function to help balance the nervous system and improve the response of the parasympathetic or “rest and digest” nervous system. Major control of the parasympathetic nervous system is from the sacral nerves which are located right under the ligament that is contacted during Logan Basic. By aligning the sacrum, taking tension off the sacral ligament, uninterrupted function of the parasympathetics can be achieved. One can experience natural relaxation, decreased tension of the pelvic floor, and even lower blood pressure and heart rate with improved parasympathetic function!

QUESTION FROM ELKE – So why are we putting so much pressure on with the sacral smash? And btw I think you need to change the name of that move. I think Push or Release sounds more appealing than Smash. Just something yo consider.

BUT it is all Qi – and when we move that . . . .

We all carry so much – rememberings as we do.
Is what Dr Jen Mercier worked out as her sequence – and I tried it in all different combos in the past 6 years and this is what works . .
In almost all cases – not doing the O.S.L. from Arvigo as they teach it – but as w way to release the STUCK in the entire pelvis/thus body – when set up to win . .
That is individual . .This is why we need to do at least 50 people to ‘get it’ I suspect. This is why LL II is after much experience – you need to get your own feel – as the Arvigo people did – we needed to submit 50 cases to go onto the advanced work – this is not an academic – but gets to be a we are seeing /feeling so few people . .

Also – because all the chiros do is the above.
No triage etc . . . PV /Accident Recall/scar work /pulling out cold . . . .

What they are doing MAY work – but the underlying womb not in right position is not ever attended to . .

Moves alone are unlikely – hence we wait for breath and do not go from one fix move to the next.

MORE – I do not tell the recipient what I call the moves .
Called smash – as, as with all these moves – it is named as we remember them for what they do.

We ARE intending to be smashing through – as this – after so many I have worked with – is what happens – their resistances – are gone with the constant pressure – and the mid back after about 4 seconds is the first to let go – then the neck – the pelvis – bot often immediately . .
Again – practice . .
And in sequence needed .

Pregnancy – some of this is very indelicate – esp the work around the GB 30 area – but – we set that up. All the effort to get you to do to set the scene, to be sensitive to their responses – so you are always in direct touch with them with YOUR body – as well as your hands-on work. .
