Thymus gland (El Timo)

A few shots in the dark mornings. A few hits when there is anxiety for this present we are living in. A daily dose of direct hits to the sternum, so it wakes up and relaxes. Thymus gland. EL TIMO, “the gland of happiness”. In the center of the chest, behind the sternum, is a small gland called TIMO. Its Greek name, ‘thymos’, means vital energy. It grows when we are joyful and shrinks in half when we are stressed and even more so when we get sick. That feature confused medicine for a long time, which only knew it through autopsies and always found it lying and shrinking. Thymus was supposed to atrophy and quit working as a teenager. Yet for decades American doctors bombarded perfectly healthy thymus with high doses of X-rays, believing their “abnormal size” could cause problems. Later, science ‘proved’ that although it shrinks after infancy, period is still active. It is one of the pillars of our immune system, along with the adrenal glands and spinal cord and is directly connected to senses, consciousness and language. Like a call center where all calls go through, it makes connections inside and out. If we are invaded by microbes or toxins, it reacts immediately by producing defense cells. But it is also very sensitive to images, colors, lights, smells, flavors, gestures, touches, sounds, words and thoughts.

Love and hate affect it deeply, negative thoughts have more power over him than viruses and bacteria. Because that negative attitude doesn’t exist in a concrete form, the trick tries to react and weakens itself, fighting off an unknown and unreal invader and opens up spaces for symptoms of low immunity, like herpes. In compensation, positive thoughts get to activate all their powers. The curious detail is that the trick is tightly attached to the heart, in the heart chakra, which is why it is in intimate relation to feelings, emotions, decisions, the way of expressing and listening, the spiritual state, etc. “I feel pressure in the heart,” for example, is an expression that reveals a real situation of the deception, which only by reflection wraps the heart in the problem.

The heart chakra, an energy source of union and compassion, has more to do with the trick than the heart. A simple exercise that can help to keep the groove active consists of doing, twice a day (morning and night), 20 repetitions of three soft and rhythmic beats emulating the heartbeat, over the groove area, located as the connection between the heart and the sternum. Taking a few moments a day to connect with our bodies, in this case through a simple self-massage, can be a good opportunity to relax and disconnect. True happiness is a state of mind or attitude that resides within ourselves and comes from positive thinking and knowing how to take advantage of the opportunities, (however small), that life holds.
